Zalakaros

Zalakaros lies in south-western Hungary in the middle of a romantic landscape, surrounded by vineyards and orchards. It is a quiet, peaceful region where the air is fresh, the people are hospitable, and excellent grapes produce fine wines that go perfectly with tasty regional dishes. Yet the greatest treasure here is a gift from deep within the earth: medicinal and thermal water whose composition and effect are unique even in Europe.

Built on this thermal water, what was a small village in the 1960s has become a health and wellness centre: hotels, restaurants and a wide range of programmes have grown up around the constantly expanding complex, which currently has 22 pools.

Those seeking a cure visit the spa mainly for chronic arthritis, rheumatism, chronic gynaecological complaints, disorders of the autonomic nervous system and gum disease, but anyone who simply wants to refresh body and soul is also in the right place. In the 5000 m2 spa complex, bathers can choose between thermal pools at 32-36 °C, normal swimming pools and the adventure bath. The medical centre offers complex treatments under medical supervision, including sitting, whirlpool and weight baths, underwater and dry massage, electrotherapy and stimulation-current treatment.

Zalakaros's newest development and attraction offers great entertainment for all ages. The first stop for guests arriving at the thermal lake is a beautifully designed reception building, one of whose most exciting features is the four-metre-high lookout tower, offering a wonderful panorama of the lake itself, the surrounding woodland and the whole complex. The lake has a water surface of approximately 12,900 m2, with a maximum depth of 1.8 m.

Cosy, pleasant restaurants and cafés serving home-style food offer guests great culinary experiences. Not to be missed in Zalakaros: the lookout tower of unparalleled beauty and the wood-fired-oven restaurant at its foot, a ride on the little tourist train through the wonderful flower-filled town, a Nordic walking or Segway tour, the open-air cinema, a visit to the farmers' market, or a glass of wine in one of the wine cellars on the picturesque hillside. Active holidaymakers can enjoy the town's football pitches, tennis courts and bowling alleys, the riding school, the charming walkways of the Forest Park, and the hiking trails and cycle paths of the area. Anglers can visit the nearby lakes of Galambok, Zalamerenye and Miháld.

A nearby natural wonder, the Kis-Balaton enchants visitors with its unique wildlife and wonderful birdlife, the Kápolnapuszta Buffalo Reserve, Kányavár Island and the sights of Zalavár, while the charming pedestrian streets of Keszthely and Hévíz are only 30 minutes from Zalakaros. The town's summer festival series is known throughout the country: star performers, wine houses, children's entertainment, creative and craft programmes, sports events - everything you could wish for.
